About The Hotel

Writing desks and Queen Anne sofas. Wraparound porches. Afternoon tea. When we hear the words “bed and breakfast,” these are the images that spring to mind. Roosters tearing around the grounds, goats joining you on your morning walk, and pigs slowing you down a pace to receive a belly rub? Not so much.

But these and more animal-centric experiences are one of the highlights of a weekend at The Homestead, a gorgeously renovated pre-Civil War home that graces the entrance of CAS. Proceeds from room reservations support the care and rehabilitation of over 300 rescued residents and innovative educational programs.

VIP passes allow guests to walk the sanctuary's paths and enjoy pond and pasture views as they meet animals including free-range goats Arthur and Stencil, blind horses Buddy and Mirage, and Nadine, an 800-pound pig who welcomes belly rubs and cuddles in her straw bed. Weekend guests can take a guided tour to learn more about the animal residents, our country’s broken food system, and how to live with compassion for all beings.

Tours and pig kisses are just the beginning of The Homestead experience. CAS also offers Compassionate Cuisine, a hands-on vegan cooking program led by certified chef Linda Soper-Kolton. A full calendar of classes begins in May, and includes offerings like ethnic cuisines, sweet treats, meals on the go, and holiday feasts. Many guests plan their Homestead stay around the Compassionate Cuisine schedule.

It was such a wonderful reprieve from city-life,” wrote a recent visitor. “The Homestead was gorgeous, and the staff so kind and thoughtful. I loved that the animals greeted me, free-ranging around the barn, one big happy group.” She closed: Such a good place. Keep up the important and beautiful work.

Restoration of The Homestead, which was completed in 2012, honored historic building methods, using salvaged beams from a sanctuary barn, soft mortar, wide plank floors and original brick walls. Each of the three bedrooms and a full suite are named after a beloved animal resident. A generous vegan breakfast is served each morning.
